The concepts of copyright and fair use help teachers to know what they may do under the law. Copyright is a succession of governmental laws that restrict the application of someone’s ideas or products. On the other hand, fair use is the act of applying copyright laws justly. The process of fair use is characterized by proper citations when using an author’s work in ways that they explicitly allow. As an educator, I think it is more beneficial to use original ideas to effectively teach students. With that being said, it can also be beneficial to utilize fair use and apply other’s ideas to your lesson plans while properly citing them. As a teacher, it is also very important to ensure that your students are practicing fair use in completing their assignments, as plagiarism is a common issue in education.
