The concepts of copyright and fair use help teachers to know what they may do under the law. Copyright is a succession of governmental laws that restrict the application of someone’s ideas or products. On the other hand, fair use is the act of applying copyright laws justly. The process of fair use is characterized by proper citations when using an author’s work in ways that they explicitly allow. As an educator, I think it is more beneficial to use original ideas to effectively teach students. With that being said, it can also be beneficial to utilize fair use and apply other’s ideas to your lesson plans while properly citing them. As a teacher, it  is also very important to ensure that your students are practicing fair use in completing their assignments, as plagiarism is a common issue in education. Platforms like ‘turnitin.com’ can be extremely helpful in ensuring that copyright is not present in students' work.  In my experience, the application of technol...

In the modern educational environment, technology has an immense impact on students’ learning. For this reason, Florida’s ELA technology standards, specifically for the 5th grade, outline effective and practical technology practices. More specifically, the purpose of these standards is to pair electronic resources that are useful in accordance with ELA standards. The 5th grade ELA technology standards include softwares such as Google Slides, Popplet, Wordle, Study Blue, etc.  One of the technology standards that caught my eye stated that students should be able to relate visual elements of multimedia to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text. I believe this is important for students to understand symbolism and what forms of visual elements are appropriate in different genres of literature. I feel prepared to implement this standard within the classroom based on my current skill set because I am comfortable with the concept of relating visual effects in multimedia to t...

Hello EME 2040 classmates! In my educational experience, I have become familiar with both Microsoft Word and other word processing software such as Google Docs. Although Microsoft Word offers many great features and is more widely accepted, I believe Google Docs is a revolutionary tool for amending and sharing word documents. It was not until middle school that I began using Google Docs, but since then, it has been my ‘go-to’ word processor. One of the reasons that I love this application is because it is very compatible for all of my devices. Additionally, I appreciate that it organizes all of my documents without using a ton of storage on my electronics.  The International Society for Technology in Education’s (ISTE) Standards are empowering for both educators and students. According to iste.org there are seven qualities an educator must embody to effectively ‘empower’ their students. These qualities include being a learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, f...

Good afternoon! My name is Alexa. As a sophomore at Florida State University majoring in Social Sciences Education, I am largely looking forward to learning about educational technologies in order to improve my techniques as a future educator. Some of my hobbies outside of school include working out, spending time with family and friends, and playing with my golden retriever named Summer.    I am excited to learn more about my classmates in EME-2040!      In modern society, technology is an essential component of an educational setting. Without platforms like Zoom and Canvas, we would be unable to continue learning in the midst of a global pandemic. However, in my experience, educational technology has been crucial since primary school. Whether it be educational videos of 'Bill Nye The Science Guy' or programs like Khan Academy that help in prepping for the SATs, technology plays an immense role in schooling.     My personal learning netw...
